What is Ductile Iron?
1. A cast iron used for pipes and fittings in which graphite is present substantially
in spheroidal form, instead of in flakes such as occur in grey iron. ----

2. Ductile iron is an iron, carbon, silicon alloy, in which the carbon exists in the
form of free spheroidal graphite.
3. In Grey iron, the carbon was present in flake form, has the effect of cutting the
iron matrix and make it become brittle and crack.
4. In Ductile iron, the graphite particles appear as small spheres, eliminating the
risk of crack propagation. The material is tough and tensile.
5. Ductile iron pipes possess the nature of iron and characters of steel.
